- Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO): TPO antibodies are produced when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Elevated TPO levels can indicate an autoimmune disorder such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease.
Thyroid function tests are commonly used to diagnose and monitor thyroid disorders. Hypothyroidism is often diagnosed when TSH levels are high and T4 levels are low. Hyperthyroidism is often diagnosed when TSH levels are low and T4 levels are high. Thyroid function tests can also be used to evaluate thyroid nodules, monitor thyroid cancer treatment, and assess thyroid function during pregnancy.
Thyroid function tests are typically performed by taking a blood sample from the patient's arm. The test results are usually available within a few days.
